REVISED: Guidelines for Membership in the Arts Department
Ikeda Sensei formally inaugurated The Arts Department of the Soka Gakkai in March 1962 with twenty members. Sensei describes these members as “burning with the awareness of pioneers who were about to raise the curtain on a new renaissance of Buddhist humanism” (The New Human Revolution, vol. 13, pp. 245–46).
Seeking to reaffirm the Arts Department’s basic mission as described by Ikeda Sensei, we would like to implement a new guideline whereby membership of the Arts Department would be open to people who:
1. Have any leadership responsibility in the SGI-USA community, and
2. Are professional artists in any medium or are enrolled in an artsrelated, degree-granting program of a university or college aiming to be a professional or aspire to be a professional artist even if they are not working in the field currently, and
3. Submit the application at the link below along with their written thoughts on one of the two guidance passages appended on pp. 2-3 of this memo.
Please note that activities such as the annual conference at FNCC will be open to all artists, regardless of whether they are officially a part of the Arts Department.
Please email any questions to arts@sgi-usa.org.
Thank you!
